Improving The Offensive Line

improving Ravens pass rush through 2011 NFL draft


At the beginning of last season, the Baltimore Ravens took a big hit to one of the most integral parts of their game winning ability, their offensive line. Second year player and former first round pick, Michael Oher, took a new role at left tackle to protect Joe Flacco's blind side, while Jared Gaither was moved to the right side in the beginning of OTAs. However, Gaither did not seem pleased with the switch.

The Ravens were in fact not pleased with Gaither as well due to the fact that he surprised everyone by showing up weighing 29 pounds lighter. This was a major cause for concern because he was not asked to lose any weight and the medical staff feared he had an illness. It is possible that he cut the weight in order to be lighter on his feet and fight to keep his place at left tackle. A few days later, Gaither suffered an injury during practice and many fans and reporters began to speculate he was faking in order to show his displeasure with the move. After he saw the trainers, head coach John Harbaugh told reporters that it was a small muscle tear that was causing frequent back spasms, and was nothing serious.     Pro Career: Harbaugh signed as the third head coach in Baltimore
    Ravens history on January 19, 2008. He served as the Eagles' secondary coach in
    2007, after leading the Eagles' special teams for nine seasons (1998-2006).

    Under his leadership, Harbaugh's special teams units were consistently ranked
    among the NFL's best. From 2000-04, Philadelphia was the only team to rank
    in the top 10. Following the 2001 season, Harbaugh was voted the NFL's Special
    Teams Coach of the Year by his coaching peers. He was also named The Dallas
    Morning News Special Teams Coach of the Year that season.

    Background: Harbaugh played defensive back for four years at Miami (Ohio)
    He coached at Western Michigan (1984-86), Pittsburgh (1987), Morehead State
    (1988), Cincinnati (1989-1996), and Indiana (1997).

    Personal: Born in Perrysburg, Ohio on September 23, 1962, Harbaugh and his
    wife, Ingrid, have a daughter, Alison. He is the son of longtime college coach
    Jack Harbaugh and his younger brother, Jim, the current Stanford head coach,
    played 14 seasons as a quarterback in the NFL, including one season in Baltimore
    (1998). John's brother-in-law, Tom Crean, the Indiana head basketball coach,
